Clean Up Day in the Borough
It was great to see everyone volunteer for our 4th annual Clean Up Day in the Borough event on May 24, 2025. Although our clean up crew was a little smaller than usual, we had a few first-time volunteers. We were still able to tackle some of our community’s trashiest roadways–including 37th St., Rock Ave., West 4th Ave., and Glade St. In total, community service volunteers of West Mayfield gathered more than 20 bags of roadside trash. As usual, we also picked up a few larger items that were dumped illegally.
What was unusual this year,” said veteran community volunteer Nora Cumberledge Soos, “is the number of people who stopped by to thank us for picking up trash.” “The recognition is greatly appreciated,” added volunteer Sharron Toy.
Event organizer Kevin Farkas believes that the Clean Up Day events are sending an important message to all residents. “We care about our community,” he said. “West Mayfield is a nice place to live, and it’s up to citizens to keep it that way. Sure, it’s hard not to feel angry and disgusted by people’s trash dumping and litter, especially after spending a few hours picking up the trash. But we think the best solution is to show our fellow citizens that we care enough to do something about it. We’re taking action.”
This year marks the Borough’s second time as an officially registered partner with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a state-wide nonprofit that joins forces with communities and other organizations to organize clean up activities. The partnership gives us access to valuable clean up supplies through our local PennDOT office. A big thanks to Mayor Licia Cogley for arranging the supplies.
Join us next year for our 5th Clean Up Day in the Borough. Until then, let’s keep West Mayfield looking good!
